Burleigh Heads Basketball Courts

Updated: Aug 14, 2022

We have been on a quest to hoop every basketball court on the Gold Coast for over 1 year now. Finding 2-6 courts a week we have seen a lot of designs. In this article you will see 8 basketball courts in the Burleigh Heads & Burleigh Waters areas.

To find more basketball courts we have created a directory with over 100 court locations on the Gold Coast. Detailed with the precise addresses, court type and our rating system there you will find places to hoop no matter where you are.

Our goal is to help you find places to play and discover gear that is right for your game.

COURT 1 - West Burleigh Park South Burleigh Heads

This is a slightly tucked away half court located in Burleigh Heads. We parked the car at the doctor’s office car park just off West Burleigh Road. West Burleigh Park was a great hooping spot. A calm and peaceful park placed inside a nice, grassed area alongside bushland.

It has a good pole structure, strong rim, decent sized backboard, and it came with a net! Features the 3-point line and key. With a good court surface with multiple smooth concrete slabs.

This spot even has undercover picnic tables which was a great spot for us to conduct our very first basketball experiment! Here we tore a panel off & cut open an all indoor Spalding ball a lot like the Spalding TF-1000 Legacy Indoor Basketball

In the previous article you may have read about the day my brother Matt took his indoor basketball outside and ruined it. Well, West Burleigh seemed peaceful enough of a place to conduct 2 out of 4 basketball science projects.

COURT 2 - Skyline Terrace Reserve - Burleigh Heads

Only a 3-minute drive from West Burleigh Park South you will find a smaller more beat up left to fend for itself little court. It has a small backboard with a smaller pole structure and a little concrete slab for all that dribbling practice I guess you’ll never do here.

What made this court different besides it’s failures, was how the rim was placed on the backboard with a strong sturdy like plate. This helped the ball not bounce around so much. We often found smaller poles with smaller backboards had a shake and rebound effect to it when the ball would hit the rim.

But this plate seemed to help with that issue.

The car park is right out the front, so it is very convenient.

The day we arrived it had a chain net! If you follow Gotta Hoop Em All and watched the episode about this court on our channel you will know just HOW much we go nuts for chain nets.

We are testing out two types of chain nets at local courts this year and so far we would have to recommend the Wilson NBA Basketball Nets

The location of the court itself was interesting. They had it sitting on a hill. So, you can only shoot from the right-hand side if you didn’t want to go fetch the ball down a sandy slope.

Overall this place was rough, but it was nothing the Wilson WNBA Authentic

Series outdoor basketball couldn't handle. Mrs Wilson was made for such a court & can handle such a net!

COURT 3 - Lake View Park Burleigh Waters

A basketball court that once had the rim in front of a huge lake on a hill. Looks like this has been corrected as now you will find the basketball pole off to the side. But that did not stop us losing our beloved Spalding NBA Team Basketball landing in the drink!

If there’s a lake, there’s a way!

This beautiful basketball court is placed besides a wide open lake yes, however it is a stunning area surrounded by tree’s and even has a family of black swans.

A convenient place to ball with on street parking and a coffee shop next door.

As for the court features, it comes with the dreaded double rim! Sometimes it has a net, and we are certain that there was a time this court had all the lines.

We found faint markings of a time that once would have been the court of the neighbourhood.

From what we gather after returning to check it out twice in six months, is that some maintenance is currently being done. Freshly painted boundary lines have appeared between visits. We hope the people painting the lines get given enough paint next time round. A 3-point line would be nice.

Other than that, it is a decent half court with a strong pole and backboard structure. The court surface is a respectable concrete, and the swans will sometimes come challenge you to a game of 1v1. You might want to let them win, it is their Home Court & their kids are watching.

COURT 4 - Deodar Park Burleigh Waters

The pole was wobbly but other than that this court was so so. It is an average park however it had everything you need to enjoy hoops.

It has four large concrete slabs to create a half court. The surface was slightly rough and just good enough for good shoes. It did include our favourite on court surface feature, the 3-point line.

It has a square backboard, medium in size. We do not see this size and shaped backboard too often on the Gold Coast but it did do the job. The rim is a Waverail design which means it holds the net on in a stronger fashion.

Which leads us to the next point it had a really cool net. We love the 3 tone red, white and blue nets. This one is tough and should outlast many standard nets. We really do enjoy the Wilson NBA Basketball Nets which have this red, white and blue throwback design.

Other than this, it was a park that will get the job done and not too far away from the road.

COURT 5 - Haynes Park Burleigh Waters

A smaller hooping destination yet one of the bigger “key” sized courts we have seen here. Not just on the Gold Coast either, but also in Burleigh Waters. Believe it or not they get smaller than this.

Tucked away between houses you will find this park at the end of the street.

It is a decent sized park with a fence running alongside the busier road. A good park for safety and has multiple access points.

The small slab of “court” was the roughest court surface we have come upon in the Burleigh area so far. We tested three outdoor basketballs on it to see how they would react to such a rough grit. As we suspected the Wilson Forge Pro was the winner handling any outdoor surface we put it through.

The backboard was getting worn out. It seems to have been quite popular enduring many days of hoops. The rim is an average rim holding the thickest net we have ever come across. Whoever is supplying that net, well done on your choice of quality!

Unfortunately, the pole is far too shaky which adds bounce and rebound to your shot. Anything less than a swish and it might be too hard to know if it’s you, or the rim that needs to work on its game.

This place is ok.

COURT 6 - Burnett and Carrie Clark Park Burleigh Waters

The rims too low but we appreciate that backboard size!

We are not sure if the Gold Coast doesn’t know that hoops are meant to be 10foot high or if this trend is intentional. But this hoop sits at 9foot. It shakes and bounces when the ball hits the rim and is situated very close to the road.

It looks like a very popular spot for young kids and their parents. Maybe that is because the rim is a lot lower to the ground everyone can get in on the action.

We saw some teenagers dunking on it, so I guess there is that advantage. It is not a court you could train at and translate that into the game. Practicing here will concrete your shot in an air ball on a real court.

But the backboard, pole, rim, net and wow, even the overhang is good! They have all the right pieces they just didn’t quite seal the deal. The court size matches the height of the rim and if younger kids are playing in a league with a lowered rim, I guess they could train here.

COURT 7 - John Handley Community Complex Burleigh Waters

Welcome to the most peaceful basketball court on the Gold Coast! Located in this large sports complex you will find a court surrounded by beautiful trees! Hooping here will make you feel like you’re on holiday.

A decent sized playing area, strong pole structure, large backboard and a Waverail rim. It did have a net, we found it on the ground. This tells us this court is being maintained. The car park is a fair distance away but worth the walk.

The surface has some grit to it and is a bit rough but not too bad. Besides the decent size of the playing area the best feature has to be how it includes the key and 3 point line. Well done GC!

The court won’t bother anyone with noise and it is just a great place to shoot hoops. Toilets and a BBQ pit are only a euro-step away.

COURT 8 - Dotterel Park Burleigh Waters

Welcome to the worst pole placement court size combo! We have seen some crazy court designs on this quest but this one takes the cake!

Apart from the super small ‘fun size’ ‘bite size’ micro court size, it was the spot they chose to place the pole that gave us a twitch.

Smack bang in the middle. This surface cannot afford to have such a luxury. The pole needs to be placed in the grassed area with some room between the rim and the court giving it a chance. It is nice they thought about the netball players by placing them their own hoop but if that’s the reason for this madness nobody’s getting any hoops here.

We guess kids could use it but what a way to introduce someone to the game of basketball. A court this bad only deserves a budget basketball. We tried 3 types of outdoor basketballs here and it would only be fitting for something like the Wilson DRV.

A cheap ball for a cheap court.

Although we must point out it has a new backboard and Waverail rim. Those are brilliant! Now all we need is a new surface.

New court locations are added regularly along with more articles like this one. Links, photos, and videos are being updated and upgraded as we go. So do not forget to keep coming back to see what’s new.
