WHAT TYPE OF BASKETBALL IS IT?
I read the description and tried it for myself. Let's see what we can agree on.
A composite leather basketball. The two words you may long to find on any ball. The Wilson Luminous Performance Basketball has a composite cover for ultimate grip and a softer feel.
The softer feel was something I noticed straight away. The ultimate grip was something that comes in time. A lot like a wooden instrument, we believe this ball needs time to break it. After you have played with it enough, that ultimate grip they speak of comes true.
But at first, I found this ball super slippery!
It’s premium core construction offers amazing durability & keeps its shape.
The high-performance composite cover makes this a perfect ball for both indoors and outdoor hooping.
I'd have to agree with this. It's soft and has a nice feel in your hands, however, it also feels like it has a supreme toughness about it. It would be like your friend who is strong and tough but also has a nice sensitive side to him.
This ball really does have both qualities making it a smooth to touch ball with a durable feel. I think it's safe to say it is secure enough in it's premium core construction to know it will last a long time. Therefore confident enough to show it's soft smooth feel on the outside.
WHY IS THERE AN NBL STAMP ON THE BALL?
In an article found on www.nbl.com.au on the 20th October 2021 it was stated "Spalding will become the league’s new official game ball and fans will have a chance to get their hands on a brand-new and extensive range of Spalding NBL basketballs"
We had purchased the Wilson Luminous not long before this. So our basketball has the NBL stamp on it. Which is also a nice silver reflective material which makes the ball have more punch!

WHAT DOES LUMINOUS MEAN?
Bright, glowing, shining? Perhaps shimmering is the best way to describe it. You will see that the channels or lines on the ball have a mixture of colours running through it. Green, orange, yellow, purple & blue.
These colourful channels reflect light, giving off an amazing glow like effect in the sun. You can also achieve this effect when shining any light on the ball. Using your mobile phone light or flash from a camera will capture some very cool beams of colour! You will also get a different effect each time you use it.
WHAT SIZE DOES IT COME IN?
The Luminous basketball is a size 7 basketball 29.5" The official size of the NBA. I couldn't find a size 6 anywhere so it looks like if you want this basketball you will be hooping with the 7.
PLAYABILITY?
I'd say this is an extremely good basketball to play with. It has been made with strong materials with that soft touch. It was one of the best indoor / outdoor basketball's I have purchased. It gave me that indoor feel while hooping outside.
The materials do ,make this a great choice for playing on any court surface. It certainly is not a gimmick. The performance is as good as any mid-range basketball and dare I say slightly better.
But the main reason I really fell in love with this ball was how light it felt. As a basketball reviewer I hoop on a lot of courts and have tried, tested and worn out many different basketballs in the past year.
The Wilson Luminous really does feel lighter! We weighed it & it isn't really any lighter than any other size 7 ball. I know scientist but I do know what I hooped with. It does feel lighter and even if it's not, if your brain thinks it is, then it is.
However they made it feel lighter in my hands actually did contribute to shooting better overall. I really loved this feature.
WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT?
The all-black cover compliments the rainbow reflective channels. This makes an already well made basketball FUN.
Go ahead and shoot some hoops with a high quality composite leather ball that even feels easier to use while capturing some awesome shots of your shots for the gram!
IN CONCLUSION
Would I buy it again? Yes.
Did I choose it because it looked cool? Yes.
Was I surprised it was actually one of the better basketballs I ever purchased? Yes.
It's tough and made to last. You can use it outdoors and still have that indoor game feel to it.
Why did I really buy it though? I bought this basketball for the exact reason Wilson made it. Because it was composite leather indoor / outdoor ball that was all black that it seemed FUN. And do you know what? They were right.
